Kaltis® New Green Freezers

Environmentally Friendly, Hydrocarbon Freezers. Good for the Environment - Good for your Lab

Before these were phased out in 2000, all freezers used refrigerants containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). CFCs are halogenated substances that, when released to the atmosphere, cause ozone depletion. This depletes the Earth's natural shield for incoming ultraviolet radiation. Overexposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer, cataracts and weakened immune systems. In addition to their ozone depletion effects, CFCs in the stratosphere also absorb outgoing infrared radiation from the earth, functioning as potent greenhouse gases.

A common alternative to CFC refrigerants, in use today, are their chemical cousins, hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). While HCFCs are more environmentally friendly than CFCs, with ozone depletion potentials one-tenth or less than those of CFCs, they still cause significant ozone damage. It is planned to phase these out completely by 2030. Hydrocarbons are non toxic, non ozone depleting gases, and are natural replacements for CFC and HCFC refrigerants. These gases have already been adopted in the beverage and commercial food refrigeration industry and are able to replace existing HCFC refrigerants without the need to change components, or oils.

To meet the environmental requirements of our customers, Kaltis® has developed a range of Hydrocarbon freezers, based on our Prime series. These freezers are available in chest and upright models, and have the identical advanced features of our Prime range. They also offer up to 10% reduction in power consumption, and the elimination of environmentally harmful HCFC refrigerants. The hydrocarbon content of our new freezers is less than a tablespoon full and the freezers have been designed to meet EC regulations and ACRID guidelines for the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants. The freezers are CE certified.
